Program Overview

The iLAB residency supports collaborations between movement-based artists and scientists, environmentalists, urban designers/landscape architects, architects and others that integrate creative practices within their different fields and disciplines. Through the iLAB Residency Program, iLAND seeks to:

  • Invigorate and re-imagine relationships between the public and the urban environment through kinetic experience;
  • Engage artists and practitioners across the disciplines of dance, art, and performance, creating innovative, movement-based approaches to science, urban design, architecture, and planning;
  • Support the development of collaborative and open-ended processes of inquiry that value and draw strength from improvisation, indeterminacy, and discovery.

The 2012 iLAB Residency Program will last from May to October of 2012. Every iLAB residency is expected to integrate the following themes, methods, and concerns:

  • Focus – using a research topic to facilitate and inspire the collaborative process
  • Research methods – exploring, using, and re-crafting research methods from different disciplines
  • Common language – managing communication within the group when words have different meaning to people of different disciplinary backgrounds
  • Documentation – capturing the moments of coming together in-process rather than capturing an end product or event
  • Component of site – working on and with a particular site as opposed to working remotely or diffusely
  • Solo/collaboration – finding balance between individual space and working collectively

iLAND provides up to $7,000 toward artists fees, supplies, and materials for each residency. iLAND does not provide funding for travel or lodging related to the residencies.
